Can you spot all the toys in this picture?
And that's not even the half of it!
In the past few days Kylie has discovered a new sound, the G. She is constantly saying "geh geh guh guh".
Another big first this week is the introduction of food. After much research, I decided to go with a "baby-led weaning" approach to food, or "self-feeding". Basically the idea is that food is fun until one. So we give her regular food in sizable pieces to play around with and gnaw on. This will help her to learn to chew and swallow, as well as introduce her to a variety of foods compared to the bland rice cereal or purees. First we introduced her to water, as that is a key ingredient in helping her swallow food here in the beginning. She certainly loves playing with her bottle, and sometimes holds it in a certain way that makes it constantly squirt in her face - which she doesn't seem to notice!
On Sunday we gave her a pancake. It was so fun to watch her stuff it in her mouth and rip it apart.
A little got into her mouth despite how much fun it was to destroy it.
Even after it was all on the floor, she kept reaching for it and wanting to eat it some more. Thank goodness for Christmas she is getting a high chair!
Lately every time we are eating food or drinking, Kylie is immensely interested and wants to be a part of it. So that is why I have chosen this method for feeding her. For Sunday dinner she destroyed a tortilla while we had chicken tacos, and on Monday she sucked on a pea pod while we enjoyed stir fry. She loves being a part of our meals and tasting all these new flavors and textures!
Baby-led weaning is the way to go! Good for you for doing some research and making your own informed decision. Just one suggestion - when you give her water, put it in a sippy cup. It will wean her off both the breast and bottle much easier and you will be thankful for that in the coming months/years! For Carsen, we started her on a sippy at 4 months with just water. The regular sippys (that have the spill-proof spout) she couldn't figure out how to suck out of, but the others work great. I went with some plastic, lid-with-spout ones from either First Years or Ziploc that work great. She learns how to suck the liquid out really quick. The only thing is that you have to help her with holding it until she figures that step out (which was about 3-4 months later for Carsen). But it will give Kylie the tools to learn another aspect of self-feeding. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteA sippy cup is a great idea! We will definitely need to get one here soon. Another reason I like this method is because it forces me to make more homemade meals, as well as to eat healthier! We are way excited to finally start feeding Kylie!
